School Year
The Smokey House Center Field Studies program was founded in 1994 in partnership with the Poultney High School. Students from Poultney High School have attended the program every spring since then. This 4 week long program is offered to select students who indicate and interest in improving their science skills and or participating in an alternative learning setting.
More recently The Dorest School has joined the program. This 2 week long program is offered to the entire seventh grade class, and is the capstone of their year.
Over 800 students from eight area schools have participated intensively in the Field Studies Program since its inception. Not only do the students benefit from these hands-on, applied learning experiences, but the entire school community is enhanced by the enthusiasm of the students when they return and share their excitement. Their teachers gain from the collaborative work with SHC Field Studies instructors in setting up a curriculum which integrates into their other work back at school.

Summer Program
In the summer the Field Studies program offers A Summer in the Field. The Field Studies Program runs two three-week sessions that give students the opportunity to investigate the outdoors with an experienced adult while practicing science and other school subjects. Beyond practicing scientific investigation and method, this program helps young people apply reading, writing, mathematics, communication, art and team skills to real place-based questions. Participants have a unique opportunity to explore the outdoors and build friendships with students from around the area.
Our summer research often revolves around a focus project. Student’s in last year’s program researched energy cycles and did the work to produce a postershowing off their findings. This year’s summer crew will research stream sites and help design a water wheel to pump water to our pastures, and map and design a pond restoration.
